Culottes. They’re not exactly the most flattering pants in the market. They’re 80s inspired and hard to pull off. That is, if you don’t have a clue how to rock a pair.

Diane Kruger proved that anyone can model culottes as long as you team them with the right pieces. The German actress complemented her high-waist wide-leg trousers with a matching crop top, and then sprinkled on-point extras like statement sunnies, a cool hat, and a pair of chunky summer sandals to create a look that was tres chic.

Culottes can make a petite girl look even shorter. Actually, it can shorten anyone’s legs because of the cropped length. But as demonstrated in these photos, you can work around that limitation by: a.) choosing a pair that sits high on the waist, b.) going monochromatic, and c.) wearing a pair of  flattering skintone high heels.

In Diane’s case, she chose nude sandals with block heels to keep her legs elongated. The trick lies in the color of the shoes. If you want to wear shoes in another color, best to go with classic pumps or peep toe heels that do not have straps that cross the ankles.

By the way, for the gals who wish to grab Diane’s whole outfit, her top and culottes are from a label called 3X1. You can score them online via Shopbop:

I couldn’t find any details on her hat, but you’re welcome to try this option from Eugenia Kim.

And as for Diane’s chunky-heel sandals, I managed to ID them after weeding through the options online. They’re from Givenchy. Dubbed as the “City” sandals, the shoes feature thick angular buckles at the ankle-wrap straps, single wide straps on the vamps followed by slim ones on the toes, and stacked 4-inch-tall heels. I couldn’t find them in nude color on the web, but here they are in leopard-print calf hair for your reference:
