Mary janes give off that school girl baby doll vibe that I’m not a fan off. They’re girly, a bit childish, and certainly in no way ladylike or masculine.

However, Fearne Cotton somehow changed my mind this week. The British TV and radio presenter was spotted in a mary jane-styled outfit while heading to the BBC Radio One studios on Tuesday morning. What was interesting about her look was that there nothing remotely girly about it. She used the mary janes to cap off a masculine-feminine attire consisting of a blue oxford shirt, black skinny jeans, and a light gray long coat.

It was a very androgynous look, but what was so genius about it was the way she wore the MJs — with dark gray socks. Doing so gave her shoes the “bootie effect”.  She literally looked like she was decked in a pair of two tone boots.

How do you like the way Fearne styled her MJs?

I’m obviously a fan so I can only say good things about it. I love the pairing she put together here. Fearne is known for taking fashion risks, and wearing socks with her mary janes is just the kind of thing she would do. Fortunately, she looks amazing in the ensemble. Would you agree?

I personally think her outfit is a cool one to copy, especially for fall. We should take a cue  from Fearne and layer our footwear too, not just our clothes.

To steal Fearne’s style, grab your skinny jeans, blue button down, and long coat, then cap off with a pair of gray socks and black platform mary janes. I’m not sure where Fearne scored her shoes, but they remind me a lot of the Jeffrey Campbell “Zelda”. The Zelda feature chunky heels, a d’orsay silhouette, and thin ankle straps:

You may also try the Pedro Garcia “Loreen” or the Kork-Ease “Priscilla” mary janes. The first pair comes in plush suede, features rounded toes, as well as thick ankle straps. The second pair comes in smooth leather and features slightly taller and chunkier heels. Use any of these shoes with dark gray socks and black skinny pants to get Fearne’s look:
